Who We Are
Claire Doan brings nearly 15 years of strategic communications and media experience to Abernathy MacGregor. She specializes in crisis response, media engagement, and message development.
Claire was the chief communications architect for the University of California (UC), the state’s third largest employer operating on a $43 billion budget. Claire directed university-wide communications, issues management, public affairs, and crisis response, while also serving as its chief media strategist and spokesperson, representing a combined half-million employees and students across UC’s world-renowned campuses and medical centers. As a primary advisor to the university president and other senior leaders at the system’s headquarters, Claire spearheaded proactive and reactive communications strategy on an array of complex, high-stakes issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic, labor, cybersecurity, immigration, state audits, sexual harassment, college admissions, public-records requests, state and federal budgets, and climate change.
Claire’s communications savvy and editorial instincts draw from her deep experience as an investigative journalist for television stations in California and Arizona. Her hard-hitting reporting spurred changes in state and local laws, and has been honored with an Emmy Award and two Edward R. Murrow Awards.
